German food has always been popular in Australia, ever since German immigrants first arrived bringing their delicious recipes and cooking traditions. As with many foreign cuisines, the Germans modified their traditional fare, using ingredients available in Australia in an effort to bring a taste from home. The first German immigrants settled in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, and got to work making sausages! Some of these specialities included: Leberwurst, Mettwurst, Weisswurst and above all, Bratwurst. They also preserved produce by pickling, smoking, drying, or salting with methods brought from their homeland. Did you know the German settlers also established vineyards in Australia? And let’s not forget about all the delectable German baked goods ‒ who doesn't like a Strudel?
German Cuisine has a bit of a rep for being quite filling. And one Traditional Speciality from Baden-Württemberg is the reserve of the very hungry indeed. Spätzle is a dish of Swabian Egg Noodles (aka Germany’s very own form of Pasta). These little pasta-like pellets, made of eggs, flour & water, are often served as a side to the irresistible dish of Roast Pork that is Schweinebraten. Of course, it’s best known when it becomes the star of the culinary show as a huge mountain of Käsespätzle, covered with a layer of Melted Cheese. (Hence the famous song lyrics: “It ain’t heavy, it’s my Käsespätzle.”) Other recipes mix together Bergkäse (aka Mountain Cheese), Appenzeller (aka Hard Swiss Cheese) & Emmentaler (aka Medium-Hard Swiss Cheese). Add Fried Onions to complete this real breath-freshener of a feast.. (And a Menulog delivery bike to get it all started.)

Kartoffelpuffer Mit Apfelmus (aka Potato Pancakes with Apple Sauce) is an incredibly simple, but super tasty dish perfectly encapsulates the non-frills Teutonic approach to German Cuisine. (And speaking of incredibly simple, don’t your Just Eat app – to put the ‘app’ in your Apple Sauce.) KMA consists, quite simply, of grated Potato Pancakes & Apple Sauce. The spuds are bound together into yummy little patties with an egg & flour mix, then seasoned, then fried. Splosh on the Apple Sauce – and voila (as the Germans don’t say). Another simple, seasonal fave is Spargel mit Butter (aka White Asparagus). The fave culinary equation here is: boiled asparagus + boiled potatoes + breaded pork + Hollandaise sauce = food happiness. In late Spring every year, little wooden huts pop up all over the German countryside offering bag of these pale delights. (All you need is a Menulog delivery bike.)
