With close culinary ties to neighbouring countries China, Thailand and India, Burmese cuisine can be summed up with this popular rhyme: "Of all the fruit, the mango is the best; of all the meat, the pork is the best; and of all the leaves, lahpet (pickled tea) is the best". Among the many ingredients used, Burmese recipes use fish sauce and fermented seafood quite liberally. Popular dishes include noodle soups, curries and the national dish Mohinga - a fish-based broth poured over noodles and flavoured with shrimp paste, lemongrass and chilli.
